Planning The Best Dog Foods and Drinks This Summer
Share
Summer heat is tough for all of us. Especially our dogs because their bodies need to work extra hard to maintain the temperature. With careful planning and some TLC, we can make them comfortable during the temperature spikes.
1. Hydration Is Non-Negotiable
Dogs can quickly get dehydrated through panting and not drinking enough water. Dry kibble, with just 10% moisture, can’t keep up. Freshly cooked dog meals, loaded with fresh meat, summer veggies containing 70-80% water, are our summer MVPs. They’re like a juicy biryani for your pup—hydrating and satisfying. Always have fresh water easily accessible to them.
Pro Trick: Add a splash of broth to your dog’s meals. It’s a small move that keeps them well hydrated.
2. Keep It Light and Natural
Heavy foods with carbs drag dogs down in the heat. Natural, fresh dog food supplemented with high-water ingredients like seedless watermelon or peeled cucumber feels refreshing. We also prefer switching to grain-free dog food during summers since it’s easier on the tummy when they’re less hungry.
Treat ‘me: Freeze fresh, natural dog food scraps with chaos or broth, and even cubed mango chunks with yogurt. Your pup will think it’s a party, and he/she will cool right down.
3. Power Up with Protein
Summer can make dogs picky, so every bite needs to deliver. High protein dog food keeps muscles strong without extra calories—perfect when their appetite dips. Look for real meat dog food with chicken, mutton or buff for quality nutrition.
The Right Choice: Choose customized dog food plans to match your dog’s needs, ensuring they gets their nutrients even on low-eating days.
4. Time Is of Essence
While you plan and choose the foods for your dog this summer, remember that extreme temperature can throw off our dogs’ hunger, moods and sometimes health. Choose early morning and late evenings for their walks and feeding times so that the impact of heat is minimized.
Play More: Plan those indoor games with their cooling treatos to keep them engaged around the house.
While we plan to navigate summers, sometimes our pups can overheat despite our best efforts. Watch for any changes in case of appetite, weight, poop or energy levels and remember to consult your vet immediately. Let's make this summer a happy one for our beloved pups!
